I DON’T KNOW ANYMORE
I had this track written and half recorded in Sydney. I arrived on my first to Nashville ready to finish it, but co-producer Mike Poole and I thought we could do better, so I started again. I sang and played it live, one take. I wanted one of those sad/happy songs that skips along as easily as it could fall to bits. The live delivery is the key, I wanted glimpses, a vision of someone the storyteller wants to help and just can’t. Signalling a letting-go that sounds sadly won, Tim Lauer’s accordion the sound of a yearning goodbye. Russ Pahl’s banjo raises the altitude “You Tapped on the window / I came to you / You’d Locked the door / I don’t know anymore “ . Pained farewells can have their sweetness.
